To become better business people so our venues and artists thrive
CONFERENCE:
Own type of unique conference
Venue development
Song writing
Business
Traditional Music
WHAT WILL IT TAKE TO PUT ON OCT. CONFERENCE FALL ’09 (or 08 if venue immediately identified):
(1) Takes funds—no earmarked funds yet—need to fund raise to offset costs
(2) Takes touring artists who want to be part of the conference
(3) Takes physical resources of ourselves—people
Possible Solutions:
(1) Have other events to promote the conference
(2) Set up SERFA so more people are involved in starting it

It was requested by FA that conference must be in Oct. annually.
There was a comment made by Hank Weisman “it’s festival month” that Oct. is the busiest festival time and he wouldn’t be able to be a part of it in Oct.
Kari said originally that in past SERFA meetings May was the preferred month.
POSSIBLE LOCATION OF CONFERENCE:
Retreat center in North Carolina –not as expensive. Stacey Earle to get back to us with more information .
Conference search committee volunteers taken – locations searched to include college campuses, other events to piggy back onto…
INTERIM CONFERENCE SEARCH COMMITTEE:
Charlie Dahan (MTSU), Doug Spears (Florida), Don Porterfield, Pam Mark Hall, Betty Fredrichsen (NC), Taylor Caffery (LA), Sally Williams (AK)
Looking for additional venue list-serve moderators
Ronnda Cadle volunteered
IF CONFERENCE HELD IN OCT ’09 BRAINSTORMING:
What to do this year?
Sally—Arkansas arts council
Ideas:
(1) Joining in with activity already happening such as southern federation event in Atlanta Sept. 24th-28th—is there a way to piggy back with that group?
(2) Checking with community colleges—local arts agencies to help locate an organization to piggy back with
(3) Another conference to give us a night to promote SERFA
5 states and 5 venues to put on events to raise awareness of SE
-make it financially viable for these venues to do these 5 events
Announcing we are having our first conference
MORE BRAINSTORMING….
What else can we do to promote the conference?
What kind of event could we have?
–Notice to teachers to broaden our audience
–Audrey Auld-Mezera said—music shops, folk clubs, Big Brother Big Sister Program—all adults looking for something to do with child
–open mic
Audrey is saying whatever we could do to have a component of outreach
Outreach valid components
–Established folk group
Doug Spears said:
Get a ready made venue, with mailing list already in place
Brainstorm on list serve
Pam Mark Hall (Nashville) asked:
–who is our membership?
–or community at large?
–why are we doing this pre-events?
Answers:
1.provide feeder events to gain new membership, awareness & promote conference dates…
2. Membership – anyone who joins FA and chooses to join our region is a SERFA member (refer to state list at SERFA.org)
4. Fundraising to offset conference costs and have cushion in treasury.
5. Awareness of what SE has to offer
Sonny Thomas (Fiddle and Bow, NC):
Said he was not optimistic about events generating interest in membership through this
Programs won’t generate interest in the general populace
Randy Wynne:
Said that events will get fans of music not members
SERFA on tour 5 days 5 venues caravan of cars with 5 or 6 artists pay artists-promote music-what is goal? It’s complicated to book a tour. Get organization notice out there.
Kari:
Wouldn’t need to be complicated – each club could generate own list of performers and SERFA and Folk Alliance could promote nationally. Many new performers would become aware and are potential members.
Sally Spring (NC):
Not many people just here to enjoy music as musician knows a lot of venues in NC myspace—go through artists
Marce:
Network major reason we’re here in SE
Friends of Florida Folk—getting organization into region
Each state would have resources to do show
Folk Alliance office will help us publicity wise
Flag ship event
Contact standing venues
Review artists and review schedules
What shows are taking place?
Increase awareness
Get Term SERFA label out there to events that are already taking place
Attach to events already
Sonny Thomas (Fiddle & Bow Society)
Eddie Owen (Eddie’s Attic) were represented two venues willing to participate

GENERAL COMMENTS AND QUESTIONS:
Carol Ann Rose, AK:
Follow up on Marce-
Linking people up promoters and artists and venues
The word “SERFA” doesn’t say what it is, needs a subtitle
-Mission statement is also on web site
Allen: we can create a poll with ideas for sub title
John Lilly (WV):
Hosted Hazel Dickens
There was a huge crowd at SERFA Wednesday showcase with Hazel Dickens, Ginny Hawker and Kathy Mattea and others showcasing traditional side of our music.
Other goals of SERFA:
Outreach to incorporate older musicians
Music Hall of Fame
Feeder Events
Find heritage musician from your regions
Think of older musicians
Kari asked for volunteers for:
Traditional Music Heritage Committee:
John Lilly, Ginny Hawker, Alice Gerrard, Sally Spring, Rick Hambrick (GA), Debbi Kauffman (PA)
Comment made about “traditional” limiting audience should this be changed?
Heritage Committee:
-discussion about names
Jack Williams likes “Traditional Heritage”
–Sally Williams wanted to note that dance people should included in brainstorming
Kari was asked how much might be needed to be raised for a conference – as much as $20,000? She replied once we knew the venue, we would have a better idea – perhaps up to $10,000, depending on the costs of that venue for using it.
Someone asked if we have an account
Kari: We have an account for SERFA and a tax #
Ben Scales:
Raised $1,000- June 2003 mtng.—told Kari he was a lawyer—going back to his day job. Usually at mtngs there is a hurricane of brain storming but storm usually ends when the meeting ends. Noted that it takes energy to keep it going. Also noted that SERFA is separately incorporated than Folk Alliance, and is legally incorporated in the State of Tennessee.
Randy Wynne thanked for his volunteer work with SERFA, as well as Ben Scales.
Anna Wolfe: (Nashville) made a comment about the need for service outreach and offered to be part of it that committee.
